Whispercraft
from "The 6th Day" (1999)
About the Design
In the 2000 sci-fi action movie "The 6th Day," Arnold Schwarzenegger played the owner of a small aircraft rental company specializing in VTOL "Whispercraft," advanced jet-powered helicopters whose blades could be "fixed" in flight to function as conventional wings. Designed by the legendary conceptual artist Ron Cobb, the fictional "Whispercraft" were based on actual variable-wing VTOL concepts then under development by the U.S. government.

About the Kit
This resin kit was originally released by Fantastic Plastic Models in spring 2007. It featured landing gear, moveable canards, and rotors that could be displayed in either the extended helicopter or fixed jet-flight positions. Decals offered the option of markings for the civilian "Double-X Charter" company seen in "The 6th Day," or U.S. Air Force or U.S. Marine Corps decals. There was no cockpit detail. It featured a solid resin canopy.
In 2013, the kit was released with several important upgrades. Most importantly, it now came with a full interior, including four seats and control consoles. It also featured a military variant with only two seats, plus a nose gun and side-mounted missiles. Two canopy designs -- one civilian, one military -- were also provided in clear vacuform. This kit is no longer in production. This model was built from an original issue. |
