The century's second decade saw small but important shifts in the evolution of manned spacecraft. With NASA's space shuttle retired, American astronauts were forced to hitch rides on Russia's aging Soyuz fleet for trips to and from the International Space Station while they waited for the long-awaited Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle to be completed. The real drama, however, was taking place in the private sector where Elon Musk's SpaceX, Jeff Bezo's Blue Origin and other companies were achieving impressive breakthroughs in the race to commercialize space.
