About the Design
The "Zeus" series of colony rockets ferried humans from Earth to the Red Planet in NBC-TV's adaptation of sci-fi master Ray Bradbury's short story collection "The Martian Chronicles," which aired for three consecutive nights in late January 1980.
In the post "2001/Star Wars" era, the Zeus' 1950s tail-sitting "rocketship" ethos seemed oddly retro, yet it maintained the spirit of the Bradbury's novel original post-World War II short stories. As shown in the series, these ships flew in swarms as they transported hundreds -- and then thousands -- of eager colonists to the oddly hospitable surface of Bradbury's Earth-like Mars. |
