About the Design
Representing the cutting-edge of Colonial space fleet technology, the Mercury-class "Pegasus," aka "The Beast," had just docked at the Scorpion Fleet Shipyards for a scheduled three-month-long overhaul when the Cylons launched their sneak attack on the Twelve Colonies. Commanded by Admiral Helena Cain, the "Pegasus" took heavy losses in the attack but managed to survive by making a blind FTL jump into open space.
Some six months later it joined forces with the one other surviving battlestar, the "Galactica" under the command of Commander William Adama. Despite Cain's subsequent assassination by a Cylon infiltrator, the "Pegasus" -- now under the command of Adama's son, Lee -- served bravely until its destruction at the Battle of New Caprica a little over one year later. Like all Mercury-class battlestars, the "Pegasus" was heavily armed with primary and point-defense kinetic weapons, conventional and nuclear missiles and a large contingent of Mark VII Viper and Raptor fighter/support craft. "Twice the size of the Galactica," the "Pegasus" originally carried a crew of more than 1,700. Introduced in the Season 2, Episode 10 story "Pegasus" (First airdate, September 23, 2005) the Mercury-class battlestar purportedly drew its design inspiration from the TOS Galactica from the late 1970s. The ship survived until Season 3, Episode 4, "Exodus - Part II," (First airdate October 23, 2006), yet remains a fan favorite. |
