About the Design
Space Patrol, which aired on the nascent ABC television network begin 1950 and 1955, was one of America's first and most successful science fiction adventure series. Like its contemporaries Captain Video and Tom Corbett, Space Cadet, Space Patrol was aimed principally at children and adolescents, and was shot live in black-and-white on a very limited budget. The show centered around Commander Buzz Corey and his young sidekick, Cadet Happy, who served the United Planets Space Patrol on missions throughout the galaxy.
The show featured a number of 1930s-style winged rocketships straight out of the Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers tradition, one of these being the Terra VI, the last in a line of "Terra"-class patrol ships. Like all the ships of its type, the Terra VI launched horizontally via an angled launch ramp and was powered by a single chemical-fueled rocket engine. |
