Terra V
from "Space Patrol" (1950-1955)
About the Design
Airing on ABC-TV in both 15- and 30-minute formats, "Space Patrol" was a first generation TV sci-fi action series that followed the adventures of Commander "Buzz" Corry of the United Planets Space Patrol as he and his valiant crew battled evil throughout the galaxy. Although designed to appeal to children, "Space Patrol" reportedly garnered a sizeable adult audience as well.
The hero ship was the Terra V, a traditional rocket-powered winged "teardrop" with a long, spiked nose. Unlike the V-2-like tail-sitters used in such contemporary competitors as "Captain Video," "Rocky Jones" and "Tom Corbett, Space Cadet," the Terra V launched horizontally like a conventional airplane, thus evoking the pre-World War II sensibilities of such comic book classics as "Flash Gordon" and "Buck Rogers." The Terra V itself went through many iterations during the show's six-year run. This was the second and, in my opinion, the most esthetically pleasing. |
