T-Zero-13 from "Assignment: Outer Space" (1960)
About the Design
The 1960 Italian "spaghetti sci-fi" Assignment: Outer Space (also known as Space-Men) made liberal use of off-the-shelf, commercially available model kits for many of its special effects sequences. (Most notably, this included the Lindberg Transport Rocket and Revell's Elwyn Angle Space Station.) One of the rare exceptions was the T-Zero-13 (called Tango SIERRA One-Three in the American dubbed version), a so-called "old atomic-powered rocket ship" the film's intrepid heroes hope to use to intercept and destroy a rogue spacecraft that is on a deadly collision course with Earth.
The T Zero 13 had a modular, functional look inspired by the designs of Werner Von Braun and Krafft Ehricke, thus setting it apart from the sleek "winged ogives" so popular in the 1950s. |
About the Kit
Millennium Models International (MMI) produced this kit exclusively for Fantastic Plastic Models as part of its 1:288 "Classic Rocketships Series." The kit was released late in 2022.
Although the ship appears in mostly grey tones in the film (While the movie is billed as a Technical film, its VFX sequences are mostly black-and-white), this model was painted to reflect the color scheme featured on the film's U.S. poster. This model was built from an original issue. |
