About the Design
Tail-sitting interceptors have long been a pipe-dream of military aircraft designers. In 1960, designers at the USSR's JSC Sukhoi Co. began toying with ideas for a single-seat X-Wing jet that could serve as a high-speed point-defense fighter for areas lacking major airfields. The project got as far as the mock-up stage, but funding for what was now called the Shkval-1 was terminated when the plane's overall mission was called into question. At this time, the Soviets had turned to rockets and missiles, not expensive jet fighters, as their primary means of air defense.
