About the Design
The Apple+ TV series "For All Mankind" depicts an alternate history in which the Soviets land the first man on the moon in 1969, thus forcing the Space Race to continue well into the late 20th century -- and beyond.
In the series' 3rd season, set in the 1990s, the Race to Mars is on -- and it's a three-way race between the United States, the Soviet Union (Yes, there is still a Soviet Union) and Helios Aerospace, a private company led by the Elon Musk-like entrepreneur Dev Ayesa. America's entry in the race is the Sojourner 1, a single-stage transport/lander launched from the moon. Powered by a K-32 NERVA atomic engine, it also employs solar sails for constant interplanetary acceleration. It carries a crew of six. |
