Skyflash from "Flash Gordon" (1954)
About the Design
Based ever-so-loosely on Alex Raymond's 1930s-era comic strip, the 1954 "Flash Gordon" TV was very much in the vein of similar early sci-fi ventures such as "Captain Video," "Space Patrol" and "Tom Corbet: Space Cadet." Set in the year 3203, it followed the adventures of Flash Gordon, Dale Arden and Dr. Zarkov who, flying their rocketship, the "Skyflash" fought for interplanetary truth and justice via the Galactic Bureau of Investigation.
Like many sci-fi rocketships of its time, the "Skyflash" was a single-stage tail-sitter inspired by the V-2 rockets of World War II. No explanations were given as to how it could fly quickly from star to star with simple chemical engines. "Flash Gordon" ran for one season -- 39 episodes! -- on the short-lived DuMont Network. For budgetary reasons, it was shot in West Germany and featured local, English-speaking actors in all the supporting roles. |
