About the Design
Although Nazi Germany's advanced aircraft projects, aka "Luft '46" are better known, Imperial Japan also had its share of cutting-edge military aircraft under development during the final years of World War II. Among these was the S-31 Kurowashi (Black Eagle), a heavy bomber to be powered by four 2500 hp inline engines in a distinctive "push-pull" configuration. (A similar arrangement to Dornier's Do.335 "Anteater.")
According to an article in Japan's "Sora" magazine, the 69-foot-long Kurowashi was to have a top speed of 690 mph and be capable of carrying an 8,000 kg payload. Defensive armament was to include eight 7.7 mm machine guns and four 23 mm cannon. Like its "Luft '46" counterparts, the S-31 Kurowashi apparently never got beyond the design stage. |
