Rocinante
from "The Expanse" (2015-2022)
About the Design
The Rocinante began life as a Martian Navy Corvette-class gunship, the MCRN Tachi, which was stowed aboard the Martian Navy flagship, the MCRN Donnager. During a battle, the Tachi was considered "salvage" and then appropriated by the survivors of the ice-mining ship Canterbury, headed by Capt. James Holden. Renamed the Rocinante after the fictional knight-errant Don Quixote's horse, the ship went on to play a key role in the simmering war between Earth, Mars, and The Belt.
Like all spacecraft in The Expanse universe, the Roci is propelled by a powerful "Epstein Drive" that allows it to move quickly through the solar system. Its weapons include a battery of ship-to-ship missiles as well as four Point Defense Cannons (PDCs). In The Expanse's fourth season, the Roci acquired landing gear that allowed it to land vertically on planetary surfaces. |
About the Kit
The 1:144 Rocinante kit was released by Fantastic Plastic Models in 2018. The kit was designed by Scott Lowther and came with decals that allowed it to appear as either the original MCRN Tachi or the "Beratnas GAS" transport under which is operated -- in disguise -- for the show's first two seasons.
Original box art is by Brad Fraunfelter. |
