About the Design

As described by Tom Clancy in his Reagan-era best seller, the Red October was a traditional Typhoon-class submarine equipped with a radical magnetic impeller water jet propulsion system that allowed it to travel virtually silently.  Such a stealth ability would make such a submarine the ultimate weapon in the event of a nuclear exchange between the world's superpowers.

About the Kit

In fact, Revell's "Red October" was nothing more than a repackaged Typoon-class submarine kit.  They didn't even bother to include the bow and rear vents for the impeller propulsion system shown in great detail in the Paramount movie.
