Type 2 2DX Mars Lander
from "Ray Bradbury Theater" S5E1 "Earthmen" (1992)
About the Design
In the opening of the Season 5 premiere episode of "Ray Bradbury Theater" (Syndicated, 1985-1992), America's third expedition to Mars arrives in the form of four astronauts aboard a Type 2 2DX lander. Adapted from a 1948 short story that ultimately appeared in Bradbury's 1950 classic anthology "The Martian Chronicles," the astronauts are there to learn the fate of the two previous, unsuccessful Mars missions. The humanoid Martians they discover ultimately provide the unsettling answer.
As "Ray Bradbury Theater" was a decidedly low-budget enterprise, the Mars lander miniature was a relatively simple design consisting of flat sides and tubular legs. (Curved surfaces are expensive!) Its size scaled off the ladder, the spacecraft appears to be barely capable of carrying a single astronaut, let alone the four featured in the episode. |
About the Kit
This quirky, off-beat kit was created by Millennium Models International (MMI) in 2022. This model was built from a prototype 3D print; the coffee-carrying astronaut was not included in the kit, but is shown here for scale.
