About the Design
This rocket was the go-to "Bad Guys'" ship in the Commando Cody cinematic universe, appearing first in the Republic Pictures serials "Radar Men from the Moon" and "Zombies of the Stratosphere" (both 1952) before being featured in the syndicated TV series "Commando Cody: Sky Marshall of the Universe" (1953). Like Commando Cody's own rocketship, this launched and landed horizontally, much like the Flash Gordon rockets in the Universal serials 20 years earlier. This was not a surprise, since the Radar Men Rocket was clearly the series' hero ship miniature sporting extra fins and a dorsal ray gun turret.
Although produced on a minimal budget, the Commando Cody movies and TV series boasted impressive SPFX thanks to the talents of the Lydecker Brothers, who would later go on to fly the Flying Sub from Irwin Allen's "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" as well as the Jupiter 2 from his follow-up series, "Lost in Space." |
