Nell Interplantary Fighter
from "Battle Beyond the Stars" (1980)
About the Design
"Nell" was a sentient, semi-organic interplanetary fighter flown by farm boy Shad (Richard Thomas) in Roger Corman's 1980 opus "Battle Beyond the Stars." An unabashed re-telling of Akira Kurosawa's 1954 "Seven Samurai" -- also retold as a Western in John Sturges' 1960 "The Magnificent Seven" (and it's 2016 remake) -- "Battle Beyond the Stars" featured a wide variety of strange spacecraft created under the direction of fledgling SPFX director James Cameron.
Nell's design is decided feminine, from the front resembling nothing less than a large breasted woman melded with her own Fallopian tubes. However, from the side, the odd-looking ship resembles a sitting long-horned bull. Go figure. |
About the Kit
Released in the Spring of 2016, the Nell was the first resin kit of this "BBTS" favorite ever created by a garage kit company. The model was designed by Alfred Wong and cast by Millennium Models International (MMI). Although the large top section was originally sculpted as a single piece, it was subsequently broken down into three to facilitate casting.
This model was built from an original issue. |
