Ming Bomber
from "Flash Gordon" (1936)
About the Design
Although the original Flash Gordon/Zarkov "hero" ship of the 1936 "Flash Gordon" serial was originally built for the 1930 musical sci-fi opus "Just Imagine," this intimidating enemy spacecraft had to be designed and built from scratch. Starting with the basic shape of the Zarkov rocket, the "Ming Bomber" featured a slightly raised cockpit, double-ogive tail skids, a nose cannon and, of course, those super-nifty V-6 exhaust pipes.
While most shots of the filming miniature showed the craft sans markings, others included black pennant-like designs beneath the cockpit windows and on the mid-fuselage. The "Ming Bomber" appeared in both the original "Flash Gordon" (1936) and the series' third and final entry, "Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe" (1940). |
