About the Design
In 1951, the U.S. Navy asked America's top aerospace companies to submit proposals for a turboprop-driven VTOL fighter plane that could provide protection for troop and transport ships at sea. Martin Aircraft was one of several companies to develop innovative vertical-launch concepts for this competition, including this tail-sitter in which the counter-rotating blades were embedded in the fuselage between the wings and cockpit.
Ultimately, another, somewhat more traditional 262 variant was formally proposed (this also available from Fantastic Plastic Models.) |
