About the Design
"Zombies of the Stratosphere" was Republic's follow-up to its first Commando Cody serial, "Radar Men from the Moon," released earlier that same year. Although "Zombies" used most of the same elements as "Radar Men," its rocketman hero was not called "Commando Cody" for this project, but merely Larry Martin. God knows why.
In any case, the plot of this low-budget sci-fi adventure found Martians plotting to blow up Earth so Mars could take its place and warm up a little. Their main battle wagon was this horizontally launched space frigate, which looked a lot like the first Commando Cody rocket ship except it had more fins and a dorsal-mounted B-17-style bubble-topped gun turret. Today, "Zombies" is famous for featuring the first film appearance by budding actor Leonard Nimoy as a Martian soldier. He would, of course, go on to play another alien in a much more expensive TV sci-fi franchise. |
