About the Design
Featured in the prologue sequence of the 2022 Tom Cruise megahit Top Gun: Maverick, the SR-72 was a hypersonic test aircraft capable of traveling in excess of Mach 10, or 10 times the speed of sound. The stealthy plane was designed by the TG:M crew in cooperation with real-life aerospace contractor Lockheed Martin based on their actual SR-71 Blackbird and SR-72 hypersonic drone designs. Lockheed Martin also build the full-sized mockup used in the film's hangar and tarmac scenes. In-flight scenes were created using CGI.
