About the Design
Seen in the thrilling prologue of the 2022 blockbuster "Top Gun: Maverick," the Lockheed SR-72 Darkstar was a ramjet-powered hypersonic research aircraft with a top speed of Mach 10 (7,673 mph).
The filmmakers designed the craft -- and built a full-scale filming mockup -- with the help of Lockheed-Martin Aircraft, the venerable U.S. defense contractor famous for such planes as F-117 Nighthawk, the F-16 Fighting Falcon, the F-22 Raptor and the F-35 Lightning II. The design was based on Lockheed's actual SR-72, the unmanned supersonic reconnaissance aircraft intended to take the place of the now-retired SR-71 Blackbird. |
