About the Design
Dr. Alexander Lippisch (1894-1976) was a pioneer in delta-winged and VTOL aircraft concepts. Born in Germany, his research led directly to the development of Germany's WWII ME-163 "Komet" rocket-powered fighter. Brought to the USA after the War, Lippisch worked for Convair Aircraft in the late 1940s and early 1950s, and eventually settled in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he worked as a designer for Collins Radio Co.'s aeronautical division. There he developed various unconventional ground-effect and VTOL aircraft designs, including this unique two-man rescue and utility vehicle intended for the U.S. military. This particular plan can be found in the archives of Iowa State University.
