About the Design
Moving to the United States after World War II, Germany's Dr. Alexander Lippisch -- the man behind the Messerschmitt ME.163 Komet rocket plane -- continued to develop cutting-edge aircraft, this time for the American military. In between designing the delta-winged F-102 Delta Dagger, F-106 Delta Dart and B-58 Hustler for Convair, Lippisch dabbled with ducted-fan aircraft concepts, which he called aerodynes. One of his proposals was for a ducted-fan fighter, a "Combat Aerodyne." Looking like something out of a George Lucas sci-fi fantasy, the single-seat craft never got beyond Lippisch's drawing board.
