About the Design
The Plan VIII was one of several high-speed reconnaissance aircraft concepts developed by Imperial Japan's Kogiken Aircraft group during the early years of World War II. Incorporating many concepts from Kogiken's bomber design division, the Plan VIII was distinguished by its highly aerodynamic design -- its cockpit glazing was flush with the rest of the airframe -- and its four Mitsubishi Ha-211-II 18-cylinder engines, which would be housed front-to-back in two underwing engine nacelles. The plane had a projected top speed of 481 mph (775 km/hr) and a maximum range of 1,864 miles (3,000 km).
The design never went beyond the planning stage. |
