About the Design
Helicopter design was still in its infancy when the world went to war in late 1930s. Gyrocopters, on the other hand -- with their free-rotating blades moved by the forward motion provided by conventional engines -- had become quite popular during the decade.
When WWII broke out, several attempts were made to create a combat-worthy gyrocopter that did not require the long, paved runways required by conventional fixed-wing fighters. One of the more radical attempts at this fusion was the mid-war Focke Achgelis Fa.283, which melded the gyrocopter concept with Germany's new powerful jet engines. Unfortunately, the aircraft never made it passed the planning stage. |
