About the Design
The Dornier Canard "Cloverleaf" was one of many radical jet fighter designs developed by Germany during the waning years of World War II. Featuring swept-back wings situated near the rear of the aircraft and forward canards near the nose for enhanced maneuverability, the design's most notable feature was its three rear-mounted jet engines arranged in a "cloverleaf" formation, two side-by-side above with a third centered below them. Two of the three engines main engines could be shut down without undue airflow drag to greatly increase its tactical range.
The design study was cancelled in 1944 due to problem with the Heinkel Hirth powerplants. |
