About the Design
The P.222/9-08 was Dornier's 1939 proposed replacement for the already-obsolete Junkers JU-87 "Stuka" dive bomber. The two-man aircraft was distinguished by its long, pencil-like fuselage -- a signature feature of many Dornier designs -- that included a very long aft airbrake to facilitate high-angle bombing runs. The plane's cockpit and rear-facing defensive turret was positioned off-center to make room for the nose-mounted Reinmetal-Borsig MK-108 engine. Like the Stuka, the P.222 was to have fixed landing gear.
The plane never made it beyond the design stage. |
