About the Design
In 1951, Convair of San Diego entered its XFY-1 "Pogo" into the U.S. Navy's Convoy Fighter Competition. Convair's design was one of two chosen for prototype development -- the other being Lockheed's XFV-1 "Salmon" -- and the aircraft began a series of manned flight tests in August 1954.
Buoyed by their success, Convair engineers decided to adapt their work to suit the needs of another service branch, the United States Army. Taking the basic form of the "Pogo" but adding an additional cockpit, they created what they hoped would be an innovative reconnaissance aircraft for use in areas that lacked conventional airfields. Ambitious as it was, the design never made it past the proposal stage. |
