Convair NX-2
American Atomic-Powered Bomber Concept (1960)
About the Design
In the 1950s, America's leading aerospace companies made several attempts to produce an atomic-powered bomber, the idea being that such an aircraft could stay at its "fail safe" point for weeks at a time without worrying about refueling.
One of the projects to get the most traction was Convair's NX-2. Originally known as CAMAL, the design went through several iterations, including one in which the large, heavy aircraft would get airborne with the help of two conventional jet engines. Ultimately, even Convair's innovative engineers could not create practical atomic-powered aircraft engines, and the project was terminated in the early 1960s. |
