About the Design
In the early 1960s, the U.S. Navy contracted with Convair to design a unique "flying submarine" for use in anti-submarine warfare, particularly in the Black, Baltic and Caspian seas in which the Soviet Navy had significant operations.
The craft would scout for targets from the air and then land on the water and submerge to commence attack operations using mines or torpedoes. Shaped like a classical "flying boat," the Submersible Seaplane was to be powered by three high-mounted turbojet engines that could be sealed water-tight for underwater operations, during which a screw-propeller would be provide thrust. The Navy ultimately cancelled the Submersible Seaplane program in 1965/66. |
