About the Design
Commando Cody is the hero of three theatrical serials produced by Republic Pictures in the early 1950s, Radar Men from the Moon and Zombies of the Stratosphere (both 1952) and Commando Cody: Sky Marshal of the Universe (1953). The character would move to television in 1953 in the series also called Commando Cody: Sky Marshal of the Universe, the episodes subsequently edited into a feature film released under the title Lost Planet Airmen.
Cody was famous for fighting crime and alien invaders with the help of his helmeted rocket-suit, an outfit that inspired The Rocketeer comics and 1991 Disney motion picture decades later. His rocket ship was a one-stage horizontal take-off and landing affair not unlike those flown by Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers in the 1930s, the major difference being that this rocket had a single engine that belched realistic exhaust instead of having multiple mini-engines powered by 4th of July sparklers. |
