About the Design
In the mid-1960s, British military aircraft manufacturers devised a number of designs to meet the RAF's call for a V/STOL jet fighter. Bristol's entry, the P.217, featured four side-mounted variable vertifans and a uniquely small set of dorsal-mounted swept-back wings.
Ultimately, Hawker-Siddley's P.1127 "Kestrel" was chosen for development, the plane's success leading to the operational Harrier jump jet. The P.217, on the other hand, never made it past the drawing board. |
