About the Design
Dated March 1938, the F.18/37 contract called for a high-speed, single-seat fighter to replace the Spitfires and Hurricanes. (It was RAF policy to start searching for a replacement for a new type of aircraft almost as soon as it entered service) . Speed was required at least 400 mph (644 km/h) at 15,000 feet (4,572 m), armament was increased to twelve 0.303 inch (7.7 mm) Browning machine guns, and service ceiling was to be at least 35,000 feet (10,668 m).
