About the Design
Beginning in 1944, a series of "flying saucer"-style fighters were purportedly built and tested at the Prag-Kbley aerodrome in Czechoslovakia. These "disc-blade" aircraft used a BMW 003 jet engine to spin eight aluminum blades around a circular cockpit to create a helicopter-like life effect.
The Flugelrad III was to be the culmination of Germany's Flugelrad project. A giant flying disc bomber, its designers believed its speed, maneuverability, and versatility it would have it a formidable "wonder weapon" with the potential to turn the course of World War II. |
