About the Design
In the years following World War II, rocket engineers and enthusiasts eagerly imagined how 1940s German and American ballistic missile technology might be adapted to civilian spaceflight. At the fabled British Interplanetary Society (BIS), the world's oldest organization dedicated to the promotion of the peaceful exploration of space, member Ralph A. Smith conceived of a two-stage chemical-fueled rocket that could boost a winged spaceplane into low orbit. In Smith's design, all of the major components, including the booster stages, were to be recoverable and reusable.
In 1954, Smith's Winged Rocket was given a handsome two-page spread in the speculative book, EXPLORATION OF THE MOON, which Smith co-authored with legendary BIS member Arthur C. Clarke. |
