About the Design
In March 1937, the U.S. Army Air Corps issued a request for a single-engine, high-altitude pursuit interceptor. Bell Aircraft responded with two proposals, the Model 3 and the Model 4.
The Model 3 had a number of unusual features. Its V-1710 liquid-cooled engine was positioned directly over its wing, the cockpit set far back on the fuselage. It also incorporated tricycle landing gear, which was somewhat radical for the time. The plan also considered using rocket motors to provide additional boost during take-off. Although highly rated, the Model 3 provided poor visibility for the pilot and was rejected in favor of the far more conventional Model 4...which eventually became the Bell P-39 Airacobra. |
