About the Design
In the late 1950s, German-born aerospace engineer Krafft Ehricke created many advanced spacecraft proposals for his employer, Convair Aircraft of San Diego. These included the Manned Lunar Reconnaissance Vehicle (MLRV), Manned Observational Satellite (MOS) and Nuclear Exploration Vehicle (NEV) -- all eventually kitted by Strombecker --as well as the Atlas Manned Orbital Laboratory (MOL), which was kiitted by Hawk Models.
For his Convair Moon Lander project, he combined the strap-on tank system used in the MLRV, MOS and NEV, then capped it with the Space Station Lifeboat designed for the Atlas MOL, which would serve as both the command module and return vehicle. The lander itself would be lifted into space by a variant of the Convair Atlas. |
