ABOUT THE DESIGN

ABOUT THE KIT

The idea behind the Regulus II was a sound one: Equip American submarines with nuclear-tipped missiles that could serve as deterrents against Soviet aggression.  In the early 1950s, the U.S. Navy, in conjunction with Chance Vought, began development of the winged Regulus II missile to realize this Cold War dream.  Although the system proved viable in early tests, the subsequent development of nuclear-powered submarines and the Polaris missile system made the Regulus II obsolete before it could even be declared operational.  The program was scrapped in 1958.

Revell came out with this nicely detailed kit in 1958, and then re-released a "History Makers" version some 25 years later.

This is a version of the "History Makers" kit purchased in and built in the mid-1980's.
