ABOUT THE DESIGN

ABOUT THE KIT

As detailed here, Project Pluto was one of the most ambitious "Doomsday Weapon" projects ever initiated by the U.S. government. The system's centerpiece was to be a massive cruise missile powered by a Tory-IIA nuclear engine. Flying at near tree-top level at supersonic speeds,, the missile was to carry a dozen-plus thermonuclear warheads. In addition, its radioactive exhaust would poison any terrain over which it flew.

The advent of dependable ICBMs coupled with the problems associated with actually testing such a dangerous vehicle led to Project Pluto being cancelled in 1967.

This was Fantastic Plastic's release of the Project Pluto/Railcar kit released in 2011 and retired a year later. This version featured the missile and booster rockets only, and came with a correspondingly reduced price tag.
