1960s

By the 1960s, the Space Race was in full swing and the public's imagination shifted from the fanciful possibilities of manned space flight to its brass-tack realities -- and the even more far-flung worlds of television and motion picture science fiction.  As a result, conceptual spacecraft model kits were no longer in vogue, and most of those that did appear were based on actual NASA designs that lacked the passion and romance the earlier, pre-Sputnik era.
