ABOUT THE DESIGN: | ABOUT THE MODEL: | |
This represents one of
military aviation expert Pavel Sukhoi's first attempts to build a jet
aircraft for the Soviet Union. Designed as a purely research
aircraft, the Su-VRD was to have an annular intake scoop surrounding the
fuselage behind a teardrop-shaped cockpit. The nose section would
have housed both the cockpit and a fuel tank, and was to be attached to
the larger diameter central fuselage by four pylons. The central
fuselage was to contain the powerplant, consisting of an air-cooled engine
with an oil cooler and twin propellers that served as an air compressor,
followed by the jet engine's fuel injection section and finally the actual
combustion chamber. Although slated for production, the Su-VRD never made it beyond the drawing board. |
