ABOUT THE DESIGN:    ABOUT THE MODEL:

Before the outbreak of World War II, many Japanese aircraft companies developed concepts for high-speed fighters that achieved maximum performance through the reduction of drag. This required that airframes be as streamlined as possible. Taking their cue from civilian racing planes flown during the 1930s, these planes tended to have minimal protrusions, air-cutting propeller spinners and pilots seated well to the rear of the aircraft.

Kugisho was a leader in streamlined aircraft development. The DB-601 was a concept that would have incorporated Germany's powerful DB-601 engine.  The wings were mounted low on the fuselage. The inverted V-engine design offered lower height, weight and length compared to conventional motors.

Despite offering many benefits, this design never made it to the prototype stage.
