ABOUT THE DESIGN: | ABOUT THE MODEL: | |
In 1956, the West German Luftwaffe launched a design competition for a Vertical Take-Off & Landing (VTOL) jet interceptor. Heinkel entered three concepts, each with the Project 231 designation. The first, 231-1 was a tail-sitter. The second, 231-2, was somewhat more conventional in design but employed moveable forward-mounted jet engines to achieve vertical thrust. Their third and final entry featured four pivot-mounted jet engines that could be rotated into either the vertical position for take-offs and landing, or horizontal for flight. The VTOL competition ultimately led to the development of the EWR Sud VJ.101 prototype. |
