ABOUT THE DESIGN: | ABOUT THE MODEL: | |
Introduced briefly at the end of World War II, military helicopters became a significant tactical weapon during the Korean War and cemented their importance during the Vietnam conflict. That helicopters could take off and land quickly even with no formal runways made them a favorite for close-in ground support. However, their relatively slow speed and instability led aircraft engineers to examine alternative concepts. In 1957, Britain's Hawker Aviation -- later Hawker Siddeley -- began development of a jet-powered VTOL they dubbed the "High Speed Helicopter," or HSH. Although the project never got passed the design stage, the HSH paved the way for what would become the Harrier jump jet, the first operational jet-powered VTOL combat aircraft. |
