ABOUT THE DESIGN: | ABOUT THE MODEL: | |
The FW-860 was one of several
VTOL jet fighter projects developed by West Germany's Focke-Wulf in
partnership with France's SNECMA. Prior tail-sitter concepts had
been frustrated by the visibility problems pilots faced trying to land a
plane while lying face-up on their backs. The FW.860 addressed this by
incorporating a "nutcracker" nose/cockpit that broke from the fuselage and
settled at a 90 degree angle, thus putting the pilot in a more natural
control position. Although ambitious, the FW.860 never got beyond the design stage. |
