ABOUT THE DESIGN: | ABOUT THE MODEL: | |
In the early 1940s, Fieseler's Aircraft's technical manager, Erich Bachem, developed two design studies for a rocket-launched high-altitude fighter that could reach high altitudes faster than conventional strip-launched airplanes. Design One, represented by this kit, involved a straight-winged jet fighter powered by two Jumo 004 jet engines that would be launched vertically by a liquid-fuel rocket similar to Werner Von Braun's A-5, which was then under development. Once reaching a 12,000-foot altitude, the rocket would burn out, detach and return to earth via parachute for recovery and re-use. The fighter, now under its own power, would engage Allied bombers before returning to its base and landing as a conventional aircraft. Although the concept was ultimately deemed unfeasible, the design studies did lead to the development of the rocket-powered Bachem "Natter" interceptor. |
