ABOUT THE DESIGN:    ABOUT THE MODEL:
During World War II, Germany's Focke-Achgelis helicopter company toyed with the idea of a rear-facing tilt-rotor fixed-wing aircraft that could take-off and land on short airstrips. After the war, Dornier resurrected Focke's idea, building the Dornier Do.29 as a testbed. Two tilt-roar aircraft were built and flown successfully in 1958. But despite the plane's success, the aircraft -- and the concept -- was ultimately abandoned. The one remaining Do.29 is on exhibit at the Dornier Museum in Friederichshafen, Germany.
