ABOUT THE DESIGN: | ABOUT THE MODEL: | |
In 1948, the U.S. Navy held an
unusual fighter design competition. They knew they needed a fleet of
supersonic jet fighters, but there was considerable skepticism about
whether supersonic aircraft could take off and land on the limited runways
of aircraft carriers. The answer appeared to be supersonic jet
seaplanes that could take off and land on water. The 486 "Seafighter" was Boeing's entry into this competition. It never got beyond the proposal stage, as the winner was Convair's famous "Sea Dart." |
