In the late 1950s, several major U.S. aircraft manufacturers, including Bell, Lockheed and Douglas, competed to win the Defense Department's contract for a VTOL/STOL transport. Bell's entry was the D-2022. Powered by four 2,850 shp General Electric T64 turboprops mounted in swiveling ducts, the aircraft could have could have conceivably carried up to 30 U.S. Marines into hostile territory. The D-2022 eventually morphed into the Bell X-22. |
