Beginning in 1944, a series of
"flying saucer"-style fighters were reportedly built and tested at the
Prag-Kbley aerodrome in Czechoslovakia. These "disc blade" aircraft
used a BMW 003 jet engine to spin aluminum blades around a circular
cockpit creating a helicopter-like lift effect. The Fluelrad II V.3 was to be the pinnacle of this program: a large, four-man flying disc that could serve as a bomber with VTOL capabilities. Germany's defeat by the Allies in mid-1945 ended all research into this ambitious concept. |
